TREE Fund Special Events Update

Chicago is definitely our kind of town, and the TREE Fund is gearing up for its best Special Events season ever in 2010.

The 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees will launch at 10 a.m. on July 18 from Chicago’s beautiful Millennium Park, with our cyclists outfitted in striking black and orange jerseys and helmets to match (thanks to KASK, our newest sponsor!).

Tour Sponsors: Deadline to get your logo on the 2010 Tour jersey is May 1! Sponsorships available from $2500. Contact Mary DiCarlo to purchase a Tour des Trees Sponsorship.
The 2010 Tour launch ceremonies in Millennium Park will be broadcast live from 8 – 10 a.m. during the Mike Nowak Show on WCPT radio, and special guests will include Chicago’s Commissioner of the Environment, Suzanne Malec-McKenna, and Chuck Leavell, noted environmentalist, tree farmer and keyboardist for the Rolling Stones. Invited guests include the honorable Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago, an avid cyclist and tireless advocate for Chicago’s urban forest.

Mike Nowak’s 2-hour broadcast will focus entirely on trees, the TREE Fund and the Tour des Trees. Plan to join us in Millennium Park Sunday morning to send off the Tour, or tune in to the broadcast online from 8 to 10 a.m. CDT, at www.chicagoprogressivetalk.com.

From Millennium Park the Tour will travel 500 miles through northern Illinois (route map) before returning to the Chicagoland area for a celebratory dinner at the Morton Arboretum on Friday night. On Saturday the Tour will welcome more than 100 additional riders for the “Ride for Research”, a 35-mile ride through Chicago’s western suburbs to raise money for the TREE Fund and spread the message of the Tour des Trees. Donate to the Tour or register to ride in the STIHL Tour des Trees or the Ride for Research at www. stihltourdestrees.org.

One of the highlights of this year’s Tour will take place before the riders even mount their bikes. Chuck Leavell is scheduled to headline a special performance at The Chicago Omni Hotel on Saturday, July 17, to benefit the TREE Fund and The American Forest Foundation. “An Intimate Evening with Chuck Leavell” will feature Chuck at the piano and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s David Spero, whose skill as an interviewer and long friendship with Chuck promise a rare glimpse into the life of a man whose resume includes the Allman Brothers, the Rolling Stones, a family, a tree farm and an abiding passion for the environment. The 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees cyclists will attend as guests of the TREE Fund. Tickets are $100, and attendance is limited to 200 guests. Ticket purchase information will be posted at www. treefund.org and www.stihltourdestrees.org when it becomes available.

The Tour concludes July 24 with a victory lap and recognition ceremony at the Morton Arboretum. Two days later, on July 26, the TREE Fund will host its annual “Raise Your Hand for Research” Gala Auction at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. The 2010 Gala Auction will be expertly managed by a professional auctioneer, and our catalog already features handcrafted furniture, autographed books, fine art, photography and excursions to NYC, the Midwest, the Pacific Northwest and all points in between. It’s a great place to shop for equipment, indulgences and your next vacation, and the money raised supports the scholarships, education programs and research funded by the TREE Fund. To donate an item to the auction contact our new Special Events Assistant, Lacy Antonson

2009 marked the first time that 100% of the costs of our special events were underwritten by event sponsorships. As a consequence, the proceeds of the Gala Auction and the money raised by the Tour riders were earmarked for tree research. We’ve set our sights on repeating that achievement in 2010, but we need your support as a Special Event Sponsor to make that happen. To sponsor a TREE Fund event, contact Mary DiCarlo
