TREE Fund Education Grant Takes Career Conference to the Next Level

In 2009 the TREE Fund issued a $5,000 Arboricultural Education Program Grant to support the Maryland Forestry Board Foundation Natural Resources Careers Conference (NRCC). Following is a brief summary of the 2009 Conference.

36 students from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC gathered at the Hickory Environmental Education Center last July to attend the Natural Resources Career Conference, a week-long summer program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in forestry and natural resources. Taught by industry professionals, the NRCC incorporates classroom instruction and hands-on field experience to explore career options and college programs in natural resources, including forestry, urban forestry, and arboriculture.

A portion of the TREE Fund grant was used to support upgrades to the NRCC website that improved the program’s visibility and reach. It also facilitated the design and implementation of an electronic application process, and development of a database to manage program and participant information. The remainder of the grant money will be used to support program delivery and curriculum development.

The NRCC also was successful in leveraging the TREE Fund grant to obtain matching funds from the Maryland Forestry Board Foundation. The NRCC is already looking forward to next year’s program, scheduled for July 25-31 at the Hickory Environmental Education Center, located in western Maryland.
