The Future of Arboriculture

The TREE Fund was established in 1975 to provide a reservoir of money from which important arboricultural research could be funded. Administered by an Executive Director and overseen by a Board of Directors, the mission of the TREE Fund is to identify and fund projects and programs that advance knowledge in the field of arboriculture and urban forestry to benefit people, trees and the environment. The TREE Fund has established specific goals and objectives within an overall strategic plan in order to achieve this mission.

The gains made through arboricultural research are significant. The TREE Fund has supported research that has developed more environmentally sensitive methods of plant management, produced genetically superior trees that can withstand the stress of urban environments, advanced strategies for tree disease suppression and insect resistance and improved techniques for planting, fertilization and adapting shade trees to poor soils.

Arborists require an intimate knowledge of how trees grow, how they react to pests and environmental changes, how to select the most appropriate species, how to care for trees in general and how to keep themselves safe during their work. Arboricultural research is the means through which we can ensure healthy trees for future generations. After years of hard work, the TREE Fund is in the position to make great strides in finding new solutions to developing and maintaining the urban forest. But the TREE Fund cannot do it alone.

The future of arboriculture depends upon research. Professional arborists rely on the effective application of knowledge of tree biology, pest problems and control, equipment and safety. Most of this knowledge has been gained through research. In arboriculture, research findings are rapidly implemented into day-to-day thinking and activities. Please help us maintain that momentum and create a bright future for arboricultural research and education.
