Mission
of the TREE Fund
To identify
significant environmental, biological, social, and economic needs of
arboriculture and urban forestry, including tree genetics, management
and care; and provide funding for innovative, basic/applied research
and education projects. Research and educational projects funded by
the TREE Fund must be in keeping with this mission statement.
Criteria
for Project Selection
Proposals
are evaluated by the TREE Fund's Research Committee, which is composed
of research scientists and trained practitioners. Proposals will be
evaluated using the following criteria:
POTENTIAL
IMPACT OF THE PROJECT
Is the need clearly stated? Does the project address a problem/issue
within the TREE Fund's mission? Does the project address topics that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arborists and urban foresters? Is there a clear link to arboriculture
and urban forestry? Will the project have application to a broad sector
of the arboriculture and/or urban forestry communities?
APPROACH
Are the proposed methods and existing resources appropriate for successful
completion of the project? Is the project creative in its approach
to the problem? If technology transfer, is the transfer vehicle/method
appropriate for the target audience?
PERFORMANCE
Do investigators have necessary technical qualifications and experience
to accomplish the project? Will the project be completed in 2-5 years? Is the projected time frame realistic?
How will the information be disseminated?
FUNDING
Is adequate explanation of fund use provided (including project budget
in excess of grant requested)? Is the potential cost/benefit ratio
for this project appropriate? Are the funds leveraged or matched?
Funding
Level
The TREE Fund budgets a fixed amount of funding each year for the Hyland R. Johns
grants. Award level of individual grants may be adjusted by the Research
Committee, depending on the number of successful proposals, total budget
available, perceived value of project to the profession and society,
and availability of funds from other sources. Awards will range from
$7,500 to $25,000.
Project

Arborists’ Safety & Techniques Fund:
The purpose of the Arborists’ Safety & Techniques Fund is to provide
research grants supporting training and the techniques and equipment that arborists using
in climbing, rigging and working on trees; and the means of identifying potential hazards,
to provide a safer working environment.
Each year, hundreds of workers are killed or seriously injured. The Arborist Safety & Techniques Fund is established within the TREE Fund to address these safety issues.
The sole purpose of the Arborist Safety & Techniques Fund is to find solutions
to problems such as these and to get those solutions out to the workforce to start saving and protecting
lives. But these efforts will require extensive financial backing. Pledge to help us find the answers to
a better and safer future for arborists.
The Goal is to reach $100,000 from which earnings will be granted to fund research in the areas listed
above.
If you would like to contribute please send a check to the TREE Fund office stating to direct the funds
towards the Arborist Safety & Techniques Fund.
The Sponsored Grant Program:
Sponsored grants are funded by a sponsor or donor for a specific project or topic.
