Research Grant Programs
The TREE Fund seeks to address the broad needs of arboriculture through research grants focused on the following topics:
Root and Soil Management
Planting and Establishment
Plant Health Care
Risk Assessment and Worker Safety
Technology Transfer
Urban Forestry
Guidelines and applications are currently available for the following grant programs:
Hyland R. Johns Grant Program (due May 1st)
John Z. Duling Grant Program (due November 1st) (no project will receive more than 1 award from this grant)
TREE Fund Research Fellow Program (new focus topic and deadline soon to be announced. Guidelines and application have been temporarily disabled.)
Other research grant programs include:
Directed Grant Program: The Research Committee, with approval by the TREE Fund Trustees, may select a topic for focused funding and solicit proposals from specific researchers. The size of the grant may vary, depending on the nature of the work and funds available.
Sponsored Grant Program: Sponsored grants are funded by a sponsor or donor for a specific project or topic. The purpose of the grant must meet the mission of the TREE Fund and be funded prior to the request for proposals being announced. The sponsor or donor may include the research committees of various allied organizations such as the UAA or ISA Chapters. Interested parties should contact TREE Fund Executive Director to describe the intended project.
Arborist Safety and Techniques Program: Formerly known as the Tree Dynamics and Arborist Techniques Fund, this endowment fund was established to make the difficult work of tree care safer for its practitioners. Funded projects should promote tree worker safety and a better understanding of the forces affecting trees. Funding has not yet reached the $100,000 amount needed to endow this program, which would make a $5,000 grant available. Despite this, the TREE Fund has given several grants in recent years that directly relate to arborist safety and work techniques, either through the Hyland Johns or John Duling Grant Programs
Application Questions: Please contact TREE Fund Executive Director.
